Position Title: Medical Assistant

External Description:

Position Summary:

 Responsible for assisting with patient care, clerical, and chart management.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Prepares patients for examination and treatment. Takes patient histories and vital signs.
  • Prepares exams and treatment rooms with necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Gives injections.
  • Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments.
  • Assist in preparing for minor surgeries, physicals.
  • Assist with scheduling of tests, treatment, and surgeries, obtain insurance authorizations and referrals as needed.
  • Screens telephone calls for referrals to nurse or provider.
  • Provides general information on department policies and procedures.
  • Call for pharmacy prescriptions and refills.
  • Maintain log and follow-up on lab test.
  • Orders and maintains clinical supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains patient’s charts, records, and other information.
  • Compiles and condenses technical and statistical data for reports and records.
  • Assists with coverage of other providers as required.
  • Attends required meetings and participates in committees as required.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Performs related work as required.

Position Requirements:

  • EDUCATION:
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
    • Graduated from a recognized program for Medical Assistants or meets the requirements of the State of Arizona.
    • Maintain CPR certification.
    • Obtain appropriate certification passing grade for specific specialty.
  • EXPERIENCE:
    • Minimum of one year work experience in public contact job, preferably service related.
    • Experience or interest in health care.
    • Knowledge of medical practice and care to assist in giving patient care.
    • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.
    • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer to patient care. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
    • Skills in assisting a variety of treatments and medications as directed.
    • Skills in taking vital signs.
    • Skill in maintaining records and recording test results.
    • Skills in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
    • Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with patients, medical staff and the public.
    • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
    • Ability to interpret, adopt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Physical demands may include:
  1. Prolonged, extensive, or considerable amount of standing and walking.
  2. Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfer and helping patient with walking, dressing, etc.
  3. Must be able to lift 30 pounds.
